Mario’s Family Portraits

Mario’s Family Portraits

Mira Mira sat down with Mario Testino to talk finding family, becoming a godfather, and the pull of Peru.

As an industry, fashion may absorb outsiders, but it’s also attracted to the cycle of families. As we see the likes of Kaia grace covers and campaigns, Mario pins our intrigue with the next generation to the fact “we’re constantly looking for icons or role models; people are always fascinated by descendants.” He is among those fascinated, having traced Gisele and Kate from adolescence into adulthood. The nostalgic pull of the supermodel era remains, “so everybody’s wanting to relive what we’ve lived before – that’s why we always look at their children.”

On-set and off, faces such as Anna, Kate and Gisele became Mario’s chosen siblings, offering a home away from home. As at home in London as in Lima, Mario says that these friends helped “close the circle – a family’s like that, we’re all part of one big jigsaw.” Here, we celebrate Mario’s family portraits, and how these relationships have helped him feel at home.
