“I had never been to India before. It was my first time and I loved it.” Mario’s first photographic assistant, Alex Waltl casts his lens over a whole new world, documenting his whistle-stop tour of India. Discover the world’s most vibrant country through his fresh eyes.
AW: This was our model, Vashinda the elephant. It was a big deal for us because elephants aren’t allowed to be painted in India anymore, so we had to get a special license so we could decorate her with organic paint. It was really amazing to see such a massive animal up close. She was so kind and totally mesmerising.
AW: These local extras on Mario’s Vogue India shoot were just so beautiful. The girl's outfits were so colourful, vibrant and amazing! Being around them made me think – ‘why do we all wear head-to-toe black at the office!’
AW: Mario wanted to shoot a crazy street scene for his Vogue India takeover – so we created this set of Indian fun and chaos. There were elephants, camels, local kids, street fair carts and lots of confetti. It was very cool.
